Administrative History

Throughout the first half of the 20th century, the predominant language of the Mennonite Brethren church and the Canadian Conference was German. This began to change shortly after World War II, as most children of the first generation German-speaking immigrants attended Canadian schools and learned English. While German remained a primary language in church and business affairs, it was becoming obvious that in order to stay connected with the younger generations of Mennonite Brethren, the church and conference needed to communicate with them in the English language.

Henry F. Klassen, the general manager of Christian Press, decided to test this theory by publishing a variety of papers with English content. With the support of several key Mennonite Brethren leaders and limited financial support from the Canadian Conference, the Konferenz-Jugendblatt (1946–1957) and the Mennonite Observer (1955–1961) were published and distributed. The interest in these periodicals was apparent, convincing the Mennonite Brethren Conference that an English language paper was necessary.

At the annual Mennonite Brethren convention in 1961, the motion to create and distribute an official English language family paper was accepted, resulting in the publication of the first issue of the Mennonite Brethren Herald on January 19, 1962. The periodical began as a 16–20 page paper that was distributed on a weekly basis to Mennonite Brethren homes. The paper continued to evolve, lengthening to 30 pages, and becoming bi-weekly in 1969, then tri-weekly in 2002, and monthly in 2007. Full colour was introduced in 2008. The publishing schedule became bimonthly in 2016 and quarterly in 2018. The MB Herald continues to report on Mennonite Brethren news and encourage and stimulate spiritual growth in its readers.

Editors include: Rudy Wiebe (1962–1963), Harold Jantz (1964–1984), Herb Kopp (1985–1988), Ron Geddert (1989–1994), Jim Coggins (1995–2003), Susan Brandt (2003-2005), Laura Kalmar (2005–2015), and Karla Braun (2016–2019).

As the official English language paper of the Canadian Conference, the MB Herald was responsible to the Conference for its content. When the paper was first printed in 1962, it was the responsibility of the Publication Committee (later named the Board of Publications).  Sub-groups, such as the Editorial Committee, managed the smaller aspects of creating the periodical, and the editor often wrote reports to the Board of Publication to keep them updated on content, subscriptions and events. The editor also interacted with the Inter-Mennonite Publisher's group (later known as "Meetinghouse"), sharing stories and information with a network of Mennonite writers across North America.

When the Board of Publication was dissolved in 1989, the paper moved beneath the Board of Faith and Life until 1994, when it was moved under the Board of Communications. When the Board of Communications was dissolved in 2002, the MB Herald became the responsibility of the Board of Discipleship Ministries. When the conference restructured in 2004, the Board of Discipleship Ministries was also dissolved, and the MB Herald was placed under the jurisdiction of the Communications department.

In 2014, the conference ministries were re-framed as "services" and reorganized around four headings: Building Community, Multiplying Churches, Developing Leaders, and Financial Ministries (renamed Resourcing Ministry in 2016). The MB Herald fit in the Building Community service.

See (click here) 2016 video describing CCMBC's four services model.

In 2018, CCMBC launched a vision for the collaborative model where the Provincial church conferences worked together to shape and direct the vision and delivery of services across Canada. The result was the formation of the National Leadership Team and the National Faith and Life Team.

In 2019, the CCMBC executive decided to discontinue the print version of the MB Herald. The last issue was mailed to subscribers in January 2020.
