Mennonitische Rundschau, Die
Description
Elkhart, IN to 1908; Scottdale, PA to 1923; Winnipeg, MB to 2007. 1878–2007.
The Mennonitische Rundschau was one of the longest running German language papers in North America. It ceased publication with volume number #130 in January 2007. It began as the Nebraska Ansieder in 1878, but by mid-1880 had changed its name to signify the larger community that it was serving.
The Rundschau was the paper of the Russian Mennonites for decades, and continued to carry something of this general character, although on 24 October 1945, it came into the ownership of a company composed of men from the Mennonite Brethren Church who made it more of an Mennonite Brethren organ, though it was not yet conference-owned. The rise of other periodicals for the Russian Mennonites, such as the Bote of Rosthern, Saskatchewan (since 1924), naturally divided the field.
An English companion to the Rundschau called Mennonite Observer was published by the Christian Press as a 12-page weekly beginning 21 September 1955. In 1960, the Canadian Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches accepted the periodical as the official publication of the Canadian Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches. In 1962, the conference began to publish the Mennonite Brethren Herald to serve the English-speaking constituency.
At the time, the MR was a vital link between family members, communities, and congregations. It has become a significant tool in the understanding and research of early Mennonite settlement in Western Canada and United States, and the corresponding time period in Russia. To a large degree, this was made possible through the microfilming of the paper in the mid-1980s and the creation of detailed indexes by the Centre for Mennonite Brethren Studies, Winnipeg. The indexes cover 1880–1890, 1890–1900, 1901–1909, 1910–1919, 1920–1929, and 1930–1939.
The paper version of this index has been scanned. Using optical character recognition (OCR), it was saved in a word searchable format as a PDF file. Links to these PDF files are found in the Holdings section below.
Providing the index in this format allows greater use of this important resource and enables word search capabilities, making the index more useful than ever. There are some things to note.
The subject headings in bold are in English. Titles of articles are in their original German. This is important to know. If you are searching using a keyword search for the word “Crimea,” only the subject headings would match, not the German titles, because in German the word would be spelled “Krim.”
Names are recorded as they appear in the original. This means that Abraham Friesen can be written as Friesen, A.; Friesen, A.B.; Friesen, A.B. u. Maria; Friesen, Abr.; Friesen, Abraham; Friesen, Abraham u. Maria etc. In the case of Dyck, variants include Dueck, Dick, Duck, Dück.
The links below are to digital reproductions of the indices. To access the particular article referenced in the index, go to the digital collection which is now viewable on the Internet Archive website, https://archive.org/details/pub_die-mennonitische-rundschau
A listing of the paper and microfilm issues housed at the Centre follows the links to the indices.

Note #2: Between 5 June 1940 (#23) and 2 October 1940 (#40), the paper was published under the name Mennonite Review. The first page was printed in English, so as to hide its German content.
