Biographical Sketch

Cornelius C. Warkentin was born on January 1, 1902 in Waldheim, south Russia to Kornelius H. Warkentin (1865–1936) and Aganetha Jantz (1865–1955) . He went to school in Gnadenfeld and Berdjansk. At the age of 21 he was accepted into the Mennonite Brethren church. In 1923, he immigrated with his parents to Canada and settled in Manitoba. He received more education in Winkler and Altona before heading off to University. Here he earned a B.A, B.Sc., and M.Sc.

In 1936 he married Agatha Dyck (1907-) who was the daughter of Wilhelm I. Dyck (1865–1936) and Emilie Poetker (1874–1931). Seven children were born to Cornelius and Agatha. After receiving his masters degree, he found work as a meteorologist in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In addition to his work and family, he worked in the church as Sunday school teacher, treasurer and deacon. He also held positions outside the local congregation in the Mennonite Brethren Conference. He was involved in missions, education, seniors housing, etc. He died on November 11, 1974.

Custodial History

The material in this collection was donated by Agatha Warkentin of Winnipeg, Manitoba, on March 27, 1988, after the passing of her husband. The collection was originally processed in May of 1988, by Lena Ewert. Since then legal papers were found in the collection and removed. The agreement for the sale of the Rundschau was placed in the Canadian Conference of Mennonite Brethren churches, Board of Publications and Communications records, record group B250.2&3. The agreement for the purchase of the South End Church was removed and placed in the Manitoba Mennonite Brethren Conference and Congregational Records under Congregations BC525, Portage Avenue Mennonite Brethren Church.

Scope and Content

The material in this collection consists of reports, correspondence, and financial information from the various boards and committees that C.C. Warkentin worked on. Most of the material is in German.
