Biographical Sketch

John Aron Toews was born August 15, 1912 in the village of Ruckenau, Molotschna colony, in southern Russia, the third of four children born to Aron A. and Agnes Harms Toews. From 1914 to 1926, his father was a minister and evangelist and through him John appropriated the deep faith and core values and convictions which formed the bedrock of his character and later ministry. His conversion came in 1924 during intense counselling and Bible study with his father.

The family’s emigration from the steppes of Russia ended on a small pioneer homestead near Namaka, Alberta in February, 1927. He became acquainted with Nettie Willms when both attended the Coaldale Bible School in 1931 and in November, 1935 they were married. Five children were born to them, the first while they were students at Tabor College, in Hillsboro, Kansas. The depression and the years during World War II when he served as chaplain to men in Conscientious Objector Camps clearly had a decisive impact on his conception of his vocation as a minister, preacher and teacher. His lifelong emphasis on the prophetic, critical role of Christian commitment in the political and social world, on faith as the foundation of social conscience and active service, and the connection between these positions and the historical Anabaptist heritage of the Mennonite Brethren Church was already recognizable in him at the end of the thirties.

In 1940 John accepted a call from the Coaldale Bible School, which began his public ministry as teacher, scholar, church leader and administrator. In 1947 he came to the Mennonite Brethren Bible College, where he spent twenty years, eight as president. He then was at the Fraserview Church of Vancouver for three years as pastor, taught at Trinity Western College in Langley, B.C., wrote The History of the Mennonite Brethren Church, and once again returned to the Mennonite Brethren Bible College. During his very active public ministry, he served on numerous conference committees, was moderator of conferences on provincial, national as well as the North American level, and represented Mennonite Brethren on the board of MCC as well as the Mennonite World Conference presidium. He had degrees from several universities, including a doctorate from the University of Minnesota. His spiritual development and personal growth never ended. During the last decade of his life, he was clearly aware that he was entering a new phase of his life, not denying his past but completing it and transcending it. His growing sense of the secondary importance of doctrinal and denominational differences and his concentration on the unity in Christian love reflected this shift in emphasis. The man who insisted that the Christian faith always implies a commitment to spiritual and moral values which can never be compromised did not really disappear. Rather he more and more emphasized that those commitments which we can’t compromise are the ones which bind us together in a community of understanding and love.

John A. Toews died on January 13, 1979, in Winnipeg.

Custodial History

The John A. Toews fonds was donated to Centre for Mennonite Brethren Studies in October, 1990 by his daughter, Elfrieda Nafziger after she had completed a biography of Toews called A Man of His Word, published in 1992, also found in the J.A. Toews library at CMBS. A single letter by Toews to Wally Unger regarding Columbia Bible College was donated in 2006.

Scope and Content

The John A. Toews fonds consists of sermons and addresses from his preaching and public ministry as an itinerant minister, as pastor of the Fraserview Mennonite Brethren Church and as a participant in many symposiums and seminars. Included are various scholarly papers written during his student days and for his degrees. Many of Toews’ records, such as syllabi, examinations, teaching notes, and minutes of various college committees were created as a result of his teaching career at Mennonite Brethren Bible College and at Trinity Western College. Minutes of meetings and correspondence between members of boards are in this fonds as a result of Toews’ involvement with the General Conference, the Canadian Conference, and provincial conferences as well as his inter-Mennonite activities in Peace Conferences, Mennonite Central Committee, and Mennonite World Conferences. A handwritten draft of The History of the Mennonite Brethren Church, published in 1973, is in this fonds as well as correspondence regarding other publications. Also included are trip diaries and correspondence relating to Toews’ extensive travel and ministry in South America, Europe, and Russia, and from participation in World Conference Presidium in Japan and Indonesia. Toews’ fonds contains personal correspondence, notebooks, and research material.

Toews’ books, True Non-Resistance through Christ (1955), Alternative Service in Canada During World War II (1959), A History of the Mennonite Brethren Church (1975), People of the Way (1981), are found in the J.A. Toews library at CMBS as well as his theses and many essays.

The CMBS tape collection holds tapes of Toews’ messages classified under NP1. NP2 holds historical lectures presented at the West Coast Anabaptism Conference (1972), a series on Anabaptism (undated), and a series on Anabaptist distinctives presented to a Sunday School class in South Abbotsford MB Church (undated). Included are also 2 tapes called “100 Jahre unter der Wolkensaeule” for services at the Vancouver MB Church (1974). NP16 is a tape of the funeral service of Toews’ mother (1978). NP19 consists of tapes of Bible Conferences in which Toews’ participated (1960–1965. Also in NP19 are Toews’ messages at the Mennonite Brethren Centennial Celebration in Winnipeg and in Reedley, California in 1960.

The photograph collection classified under NP23 consists of a portrait of Toews and a group picture of the participants of the Prediger-Kursus at the MB Bible College on 4 March 1955. NP104 contains originals used in Elfrieda Nafziger’s biography of Toews, Man of His Word.
