Biographical Sketch

Franz Jacob Klassen was born December 15, 1879 in Kronstal, Russia, to Jacob J. and Aganetha (Janzen) Klassen. He was drafted into the state service in 1902 and served in the Crimea. In 1905 he found true faith and was baptized April 18, 1905 into membership in the MBG, Einlage.

In 1907 Franz married Maria Zacharias, and they had four children, one of whom died in infancy. In 1923 they emigrated to Canada, settling in Herbert, SK, where Maria died, in 1929.

Franz then married the widow Katharina (Peters) Krickan in 1930 and together they had a daughter. They moved to British Columbia in 1941, living happily together for 33 years, until Franz died June 9, 1963.

He left behind his wife, Katharina, two daughters, two sons, two step-sons, twenty-three grandchildren and five great-grand-children.

The material in this collection was included in a donation of Canadian Conference of MB Churches’ Christian Education records.

Scope and Content

This collection of material contains correspondence relating to Franz Klassen, Herbert SK including his last will and testament of December 29, 1930. Also included is a letter written in Russian, the contents of which are unknown. The obituary was added by the archives.
