Biographical Sketch

Franz Hübert was born on October 15, 1875 to Franz J. (1850–1920) and Elizabeth (Janzen) Hübert in Margenau, Molotschna, south Russia. He married Helena Wiebe and they had one son and four daughters. In 1903 Helena died and Franz married Helena Barg. To this marriage five sons and two daughters were born. Around the year 1908 the family moved north to Siberia and lived in Tiegerweide.

The Russian Revolution was a difficult time for the entire country and the Hübert family was no exception. The remaining family escaped in 1927 and immigrated to Canada. They settled first in Duchess, Alberta and a year later relocated to Coaldale, Alberta where he became a successful farmer. In 1948 his second wife, Helena Barg died. In December 1963, Franz Hübert was hospitalized and died on New Years day, 1964.

Custodial History

These records came to the Centre from Mrs. Agnes (Jacob F.) Huebert from Coaldale, Albert via her niece Lorina Marsch ca. 1994. Jacob F. Huebert had apparently inherited the papers from his father after he passed away. When the records arrived at the Centre, archivist Alf Redekopp worked through the papers and added the photocopied obituaries ca. 1995. Bill Schroeder was able to read the letters and made the original file list and arranged the material.

Scope and Content

This collection consists primarily of correspondence to and from the Hübert family. The letters come from family in Siberia and a few from South America. Other material consists of obituaries and genealogical material relevant to the Hübert family. All the letters are hand written in the German gothic script.
