He was baptized and became a member of the Mennonite Brethren Church on May 24, 1904. After three years of service in the Vorstei (forestry service) he married Anna Lepp on January 6, 1908. In the spring of 1909 he and his wife moved to Omsk-Post, Siberia where he worked as a bookkeeper in his father-in-law’s flour mill.

In 1924 they immigrated to Canada, settling in Aberdeen, Saskatchewan where they farmed until 1937. After they lived for two years in Ontario, they moved to Manitoba where Anna died in May, 1947. The following winter, Franz moved to British Columbia and on December 7 he married Maria Penner who brought with her seven children from her first marriage. She died in January, 1967.
