Administrative History

The Waldheim Mennonite Brethren Church is a member of the Canadian Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches. Brotherfield, a country church six miles west of Waldheim, was the mother church of the Waldheim MB Church.

In 1918, a number of Brotherfield members who lived in or near to the town of Waldheim decided to organize their own church because winter driving to Brotherfield was difficult. This organizational meeting was led by Elder David Dyck, the leader of the Brotherfield Church. Congregational services were held first in an empty store, next in the Empress Hotel, and then in the old public school. By 1920, the members had built a sanctuary.

In 1970, the Laird MB Church united with the Waldheim Church, and, in 1988, the Brotherfield Church closed and merged with the Waldheim Church.

Church membership in 2000 was 213, and 233 in 2010.

Leaders have included David Dyck (1919), J.J. Siemens, Jacob T. Ediger (1920–1939), George Willems (1940–1944), Jacob Adrian, Frank Janzen, Paul J. Wiebe (1958–1960), John D. Goertzen (1960–1968), Adolph Redekop (1969–1973), Otto Derksen (1974–1979), John D. Goertzen (1979–1980), John Schmidt (1981–1983), John Block (1984–1990), Clarence Peters (1991–2008), Greg Wiens (2009–2018), Kim Worthington (2020– ).

Scope and Content

This fonds consists of the following series: Membership records, minutes of congregational meetings, yearbooks, church bulletins, and historical notes. The materials show the history and activities of the people involved with the church.

Custodial History

Many of the records were microfilmed in 1978 through the work of the Historical Commission of the Mennonite Brethren Conference. File 1 and the Waldheim Golden Jubilee booklet came to Centre for Mennonite Brethren Studies from Bethany Bible School in 1996. Most of the yearbooks and the minutes 1992–98 were transferred by Eileen Quiring of Waldheim Mennonite Brethren Church in 1999; others were donated periodically in 2003–2011 by the church.
