Administrative History

The Richmond Park Mennonite Brethren Church began in 1954 as a the Gospel Light Mission, a ministry to rural people who sought employment in the city of Brandon. Under the leadership of Abe Froese, evening services were initially conducted in a rented house. On November 21, 1954, a dedication were took place. In the spring of 1956, Lawrence Warkentin became the pastor, and the services were moved to the Forresters Hall. On August 20, 1957, the church had a sod-turning ceremony for a new building. The first baptismal service was held in June 1959.

The church was accepted into the Manitoba Conference in 1960 as the Brandon Mennonite Brethren Church. In 1960, Harvey Goossen became the pastor. In 1965, Henry Willms became the pastor and helped the church to develop strongly. They began to have programs such as Pioneer Girls and Christian Service Brigades. In 1970, the church building was expanded and the dedication service for the new building was held on June 7. In 1973, the Alexander MB Church joined membership with the Richmond Park MB Church. In 1975, Albert Baerg became the pastor and began a plan for expansion. A sod-turning ceremony took place on June 20th, 1977.

The leaders of the church included: Abe Froese (1954–1956), Lawrence Warkentin (1956–1959), Harvey Goossen (1960–1964), Henry Willms (1965–1974), Albert Baerg (1975–1980), Harold Krahn (1982–1984), David Bergen (1985–1987) and John Unger (1989–1999), Dave Ens (2001- 2009), Roger Thiessen, Interim (2009–2010), Ben Kramer (2010–2014), Brian Ray (2018– ).

This fond consists the following 14 series of textuals records: History and Constitutions, Membership and Family Records, Weekly Bulletins and News Letters, Membership Minutes and Reports, Council Minutes and Reports, Board of Management Records, Board of Christian Education Records, Board of Evangelism and Other Outreach Records, Board of Spiritual and Social Concerns Records, Ladies Fellowship Records, Other Committees, Programs and Information Files, Correspondence Files, the East End Mission and Riverview Mennonite Brethren Church files and the Gospel Light Bible Camp records. The sound records consist of special events in the life of the congregation such as the building dedication service, ordination and installation services, anniversary services, and of sample sermons preached at the church.

Custodial History

Many records were microfilmed in 1978 through the work of the Historical Commission of the MB Conference. Original materials were deposited at the Centre for Mennonite Brethren Studies by Shirley Bergen in 1993, 1994, 1998, 2008, 2009 and 2010.
