Administrative History

The Northgate church was first known as the Dawson Creek Mennonite Brethren Church. In 1962, the church, with Jake Neufeld as leader, began as an outreach program of the Mennonite Brethren Conference of British Columbia. Its first core group was teachers who had moved to the area and taught in Dawson Creek. This congregation became part of the Mennonite Brethren family of conferences in 1963.

Through the efforts of Dan Reimer, who had already been in the area, this group was able to rent an old school for one dollar a month, including all facilities. This served as their meeting place for one year, while plans were being made to build a sanctuary using volunteers.

Soon after moving into their new building in 1965, pastor Jake Neufeld accepted a position in Ontario. Assistant pastor Leo Siemens became pastor until 1968. In 1965, the church had 21 members, which ballooned to 46 in 1971 and declined to 28 in 1977.

In 1978, the church changed its name from Dawson Creek Mennonite Brethren to Northgate Community Church. In 1986, the church changed its name again from Northgate Community Church to Northgate Mennonite Brethren Church.  Membership increased until 1994 when it stood at 68. By 2003, the membership had decreased to 23.

In 2016, the congregation changed its affiliation from the BC Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches to the Mennonite Church British Columbia and became known as Northgate Anabaptist Fellowship.

The congregation held its final service on 10 October 2021.

The following pastors have served the Northgate congregation: Jake Neufeld (1962–1965), Tom Loewen, Leo Siemens (1965–1968), Alvin Penner (1969–1974), George Anastasiades (1974–1975), Chris Wilson (1977–1978), John E. Friesen (1979–1983), John Klassen (1983–1997), Brian Palmer (1997–1998), David & Friedrun Dyck (1999–2000),  Corey Lizotte (2000–2003).

Scope and Content

This fonds consists of plans, bills and a few photos when Dawson Creek MB Church was built in 1964.  It also contains reports, minutes, finances and  correspondence.  There are bulletins and photos from Northgate Mennonite Brethren Church. These documents detail the congregation's ministry priorities and community outreach.

Custodial History

The material in this collection was donated by Delores Plenert, it was delivered by Eileen Klassen to CMBS on behalf of Northgate Mennonite Brethren Church in June 2009. A further donation was delivered by Delores Plenert, November 2011. A final deposition was made by Eileen Klassen in August 2022.
