Administrative History

In 1906, German-speaking immigrants to Winnipeg met in private homes for prayer and fellowship in the Elmwood/Louise Bridge area. When they heard of the German-speaking congregation, the Winkler MB Church, they appealed to the church for help. Ministers from the Winkler MB Church began visiting Winnipeg several times a year to preach and hold services in the Elmwood/Louise Bridge section of Winnipeg. In 1911, Johann Warkentin, from Winkler, decided to help the small Winnipeg group by buying a property on the other side of the Red River, at the corner of Burrows and Andrews in Winnipeg's North-end, moving a small chapel onto the land for the congregation to use.

The Northern-District Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches was asked to find permanent leadership for the Winnipeg church. Wilhelm J. Bestvater, from Mountain Lake, Minnesota, came in 1913 to assume leadership of the Winnipeg church. Soon the congregation needed more room than the chapel could provide, so they moved into a hall, renting space from a German Baptist congregation, McDermot Avenue Baptist church. When this also became too small, the congregation started to build a church in 1917 on the property at Burrows and Andrews, but only got as far as the first floor and basement with an improvised roof. The new leader, C.N. Hiebert, spent many hours a day at the train station during the 1920s, supplying food and clothing to the many Russians Mennonite immigrants who came to Winnipeg daily. Because of the influx of new immigrants, the first floor and basement structure was not big enough.

In 1930, a new building was completed at 621 College Avenue. This congregation was known as the North End MB Church, the "mother" Mennonite Brethren church for all of Winnipeg for the next 25 years. The church was a city mission, as well as the MB Church. The task became too much for one person, so in 1936, Franz Isaac became the leading minister and Rev. Hiebert concentrated on the city mission. Need for a bigger church prompted C. A. DeFehr to donate a plot of land to the congregation in the Elmwood area in 1951, which would bring the congregation back to the community in which it had begun. On February 7, 1954, the new church at 155 Kelvin (later called 145 Henderson Highway) was dedicated and the church became known as the Elmwood MB Church. I.W. Redekop became the first full-time pastor.

The leaders of the church included Wilhelm J. Bestvater (1913–1921), Erdman Nikkel (1921–1925), C.N. Hiebert (1925–1936), Franz Isaak (1936–1939), Franz Thiessen (1939–1943), B.B. Fast (1943–1949), David K. Duerksen (1949–1953), I.W. Redekop (1954–1967), W.J. Schmidt (1968–1971), Eugene Gerbrandt (1972–1975), Peter R. Toews (1977–1979), Henry Brucks (1981), Jacob "Jay" Neufeld (1983–1987), Abe Klassen (1989–1997), Keith Poysti (1997–2005), Victor Kliewer (2006–2009), Terry Sawatzky (2009–2012), Ken Stoesz (2013– ).
