Biographical Sketch
Peter Wiebe was born to Peter (1858–1904) and Helena (1864–1908) Wiebe on March 17, 1886, in Michaelsburg, Fürstenland, south Russia. At the age of one and a half, the family moved to Alexefeld, Sagradovka. Five years later, the family moved again, this time to live on an estate in the village of Feodorovka, Ekaterinaslav province. Crops were poor so the family was forced to move again when Peter was sixteen years old. He got married in Russia to Helena Lietz (1886–1973) and with his wife and children immigrated to Canada in 1908, settling in the Rosthern area. An uncle of Peter’s, David Epp, lived in Waldheim where they lived for a time. Soon they moved to Dalmeny, Saskatchewan. The family also later moved to Salem, Borden, Acme, and Coaldale, Alberta in ca. 1930. In 1935, he became ill, recovering in 1936, when he opened a shoe repair shop. He moved to Yarrow, B.C., in 1941, with his wife and youngest two children. In 1951, he died on pneumonia. His wife died in 1973.
Custodial History
During Peter Wiebe’s serious illness in 1935, he began his autobiography and finished it in 1936. His grand-daughter, Leona, in 1984, translated the piece from German and added the pictures, prologue, maps, genealogy, and footnotes to place the story in its historical context. It is unclear when the item was donated to the Centre.
