Heavens Declare, The

Description

Here are worship resources inspired by the first six verses of Psalm 19.

Scripture

Psalm 19:1-6

Prayers

Prayer of Praise

The warmth
of the sun's embrace
the gentle breeze swept in
by incoming tide
the rhythm of seasons
of new birth
death and recreation
All these speak so clearly
of your love
your power
and your beauty
All are expressions
of your creativity
and more importantly of yourself
As an artist might share his personality
within each brushstroke
so within the myriad colours
of a butterfly's wing
you share the exuberance of your love

That we can glimpse you
within creation is a beautiful thought
but also tells us
that you desire to be seen
to be found and known
Open our eyes, Lord
as we walk through this world
feel the wind and sunshine
see the majesty of creation unfolding before our eyes
Help us
to see you

Prayers of the People

God, your glory fills the heavens
and all that you have made bears your mark.
We pray for this creation:
we ask forgiveness for the ways in which we have disfigured it;
we pray for those who cannot enjoy
the warm sun or the cool night,
those who are imprisoned or alone . . .
those who are ill or infirm . . .
those who mourn . . .
Use all of us, our hearts, our hands,
to bring your wondrous power into their lives.
Let us glorify you, O God.
Let your hymn resound in our lives.

Silence

God, your perfect law protects and revives us
and your way enlightens and enlivens us.
We pray for all the peoples of this world,
people hungry for order and safety, warmth and shelter . . .
women and men who lay down their lives to keep their neighbors safe . . .
and those who lead our nations, cities, and towns . . .
Help us unearth this treasure of justice and equality
and bring it to all the world.
Let us glorify you, O God.
Let your hymn resound in our lives.

Silence

Hear these and all our prayers, great God.
Let the words of our mouths
and the meditations of our hearts
be acceptable to you, O Lord,
our Rock and our Redeemer.

Prayer of Praise & Confession (based on Psalm 19)

Your glory, O God
is declared in the holy silence of the heavens,
and told in the silent succession of day and night.

No speech, or word or voice is heard;
yet they speak to all the world,
and their words reach to the ends of the earth.

The sun joyfully leaps across the sky,
from one end of the heavens to the farthest reaches,
and nothing is hidden from its heat or light.
So nothing that we do or say or whisper in our hearts
is hidden from you, Lord God.

Release us from darkness we hide deep within our lives.
Let our lives be radiant with holy fear;
delighting in your teaching,
receiving insight from your commandments
and wisdom from your encouraging.

Enliven our desire for your everlasting judgments
over wealth or fame:
to enjoy the sweet drippings of the honeycomb,
that are to be found in right relationship with those around us,
and with you.

Amen.

Spoken Resources

Call to Worship

The Lord our God is revealed to us in many ways—
through God’s creative love in nature and people.
With reverent awe we come to worship our Glorious God.

The truths about our God are spoken so fluently—
through our God’s creative Word and Presence.
With joy and delight we gather to worship our God.

The reality of God’s creative Spirit can be experienced each day—
in changed lives, and in sustained and renewed creation.
Praise be to the God who speaks to us in so many ways.
We respond by offering our thoughts in worship and praise.

Amen.

Testimony of Faith

We believe in one God, who is Creator,
maker of all we see and all we don't see;
Who is Ruler of the universe:
Source of all creation!

We believe in one God, who is Jesus Christ,
God from God, Light from Light, true God and true human.
He is one with the Creator; the Word made flesh, our Messiah:
Savior of all creation!

We believe in one God, who is Holy Spirit,
Breath of God moving among us.
Who is one with the Creator; one with the Christ; our Comforter and our Guide:
Mentor of all creation!

Traditional Hymn: Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee

Worship Together #56

Joyful, joyful, we adore thee,
God of glory, Lord of love;
hearts unfold like flowers before thee,
praising thee, their sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness;
drive the dark of doubt away.
Giver of immortal gladness,
fill us with the light of day!

All thy works with joy surround thee,
earth and heaven reflect thy rays,
stars and angels sing around thee,
center of unbroken praise.
Field and forest, vale and mountain,
blooming meadow, flashing sea,
chanting bird and flowing fountain,
call us to rejoice in thee.

Mortals, join the mighty chorus
which the morning stars began;
love divine is reigning o'er us,
leading us with mercy’s hand.
Ever singing, march we onward,
victors in the midst of strife;
joyful music leads us sunward,
in the triumph song of life!

~ Henry van Dyke, 1911, alt.

Contemporary Song: We Cry Out

Anthems fill the skies with praise
All Your mighty works display Your glory
They tell of Your glory

We who called upon Your name
Cannot be silent we will praise
We'll sing it out oh we will sing it out

For we have seen the greatness
Of Your glory be revealed
And we have seen all that You've done
And we cannot be still

We will cry out to You
Your loving-kindness and Your truth
It has delivered us
You have delivered us
Great is Your glory Lord
When nations learn of Your ways
They will bow down to You
We will bow down to You

Into all the world we take the myst'ry
Of Your saving grace shine the light
Into the darkness

We will cry out to You
Oh You have delivered us
You have delivered us
Great is Your glory Lord
When nations learn of Your ways
They will bow down to You
We will bow down to You

Contemporary Song: All Heaven Declares

All heaven declares
The glory of the risen Lord
Who can compare with
The beauty of the Lord

Forever He will be
The Lamb upon the throne
I gladly bow the knee
And worship Him alone

I will proclaim
The glory of the risen Lord
Who once was slain
To reconcile man to God

Forever You will be
The Lamb upon the throne
I gladly bow the knee
And worship You alone
