Biographical Sketch

Frank Cornelius Peters was born on July 5, 1920, to Cornelius Peters (1889 – 1973) and Katharina Hildebrand ([1890 –] – 1920) in the Ignatyevo Mennonite Village of Ekaterinovka, Ukraine. Shortly after his birth, Katharina passed away, leaving Cornelius a widower with five children. Cornelius was remarried on November 1, 1920, to Anna Reimer.

The Peters family immigrated to Canada in 1924 and settled with a relative in Langham, Saskatchewan. After a failed attempt at farming in 1925, the family moved in 1926 to Herbert, Saskatchewan. In the early 1930s, the Great Depression caused the family to relocate to British Columbia. Money was tight, so Frank dropped out of school in order to work. In 1937, Frank and his elder brother, Peter, decided to move to Foam Lake, Saskatchewan, in order to work as farm hands. Frank also took a job at Barkman Flour Mill, creating a close relationship with its owner, Klaus Barkman. Frank’s brother-in-law, Martin Duerksen, encouraged Frank to attend church with his family at Foam Lake Mennonite Brethren. Frank became a Christian and was baptized shortly thereafter, on June 23, 1940.

After his baptism, Klaus Barkman offered Frank the opportunity to study at Bethany Bible Institute in Hepburn, Saskatchewan. Frank was happy to do so, spending a year at the Bible school before returning to his family in Yarrow, B.C. and attending Yarrow Bible School. It was here that he met his future wife, Melita Krause (Oct 30, 1931 – )

At this time, Frank was conscripted for service in World War II. Claiming Conscientious Objector status, Frank was placed in a camp where he planted trees and did road work on Vancouver Island. A short reprieve from duty allowed him to marry Melita on August 15, 1943, at Yarrow Mennonite Brethren Church. Melita moved to a small cabin close to camp, where Frank visited as often as he could. The two would have five children: Robert James, Edward Allan, Gerald Franklin, Marianne Joyce and John Wesley.

After the war, Frank was excited about the prospect of continuing his studies. In 1945, Frank and Melita left for Hillsboro, Kansas, where Frank was enrolled at Tabor College. In order to make money, Frank worked a night shift, attending school during the day. A rare opportunity presented itself when a nearby church, Steinrich Mennonite Brethren, offered Frank a position as their pastor. This position allowed Frank to continue his studies and gain experience in pastoral communication.

Frank graduated from Tabor College with his BA in 1947 and continued his studies at Emporia State Teachers’ College, where he earned his MSc in 1948. That same year, the couple received a letter from the Immigration Department, demanding that they return to Canada. Frank and his young family, moved back to B.C., where he had to take odd jobs to make ends meet. In the autumn of 1948, Frank was offered a teaching position at Yarrow Bible School, which he joyfully took. It was during this time that he was recruited to be the lead pastor at Kitchener Mennonite Brethren Church in Ontario. After finishing his teaching contract, Frank’s family packed up once again and moved to Kitchener in 1949.

Frank continued his education while preaching full-time. In 1952, he graduated with his Bachelor of Divinity from Waterloo Lutheran Seminary. He later received his Master of Theology degree from the Federated Faculty in Toronto. Change came once again in 1954, when Tabor College asked Frank to become president. The family returned to Hillsboro, Kansas, but Frank did not flourish in his new position and resigned only two years later, in 1956. While in Kansas, Frank had begun work on his Doctor of Theology degree through the Central Baptist Seminary in Kansas City. In order to complete his degree, Frank took a job pastoring two small country churches for the Evangelical United Brethren Church. The money allowed Frank to enroll in the PhD program at the University of Kansas.

While working on his PhD, Frank was invited to teach at Mennonite Brethren Bible College (MBBC) in Winnipeg. The family packed up and moved to Winnipeg in 1957. Frank taught courses in psychology, as well as biblical and theological studies and was made the first ever academic dean of the college. He continued to preach on weekends, addressing communities in English, German, and even Low German. In 1965, he finished his work at MBBC and returned to the pastoral position at Kitchener Mennonite Brethren Church in Ontario. Alongside his pastoral duties, he accepted a teaching position at Wilfred Laurier University. It wasn’t long before the University asked Frank to become their president, which he did in 1968. His presidential duties kept him busy, especially as the University transitioned from a church-funded centre to one funded by the government. He was also kept busy with his role as moderator for the General Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches, a position he held in 1965 –1969. Frank eventually had to step down from his role at Kitchener MB Church in 1973, but continued to preach for many denominations. He also became the moderator for the Canadian Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches from 1975 – 1977.

When Frank left Wilfred Laurier University in 1978, his profound impact on the school was celebrated and a building was named in his honor. The Peters family returned to Winnipeg, where Frank accepted the pastoral position at Portage Avenue Mennonite Brethren Church in 1980. The family remained in Winnipeg until 1983, when they once again returned to Kitchener. Frank continued preaching, not only in Canada but in Africa, South America, Asia, and the Philippines. Although he was “retired,” Frank also took a part-time teaching position at Emmanuel Bible College in Kitchener. In 1987, the Board of Reference and Counsel elected Frank as a member. It came as a shock when Frank passed away on October 7, 1987, after suffering a heart attack.
