Biographical Sketch

Katherina was born on Sept. 23, 1920 to Jacob and Anna Loewen in Gnadenthal Baratov, south Russia. The family immigrated to Canada in 1925, settling in Killarney, Manitoba. She was baptized upon confession of Christian faith and joined the Holmfield (Manitoba) MB Church. She attended Winkler Bible School. The family moved to Elm Creek, Manitoba in 1943. She participated in choir and young people's activities.

When arthritis set in in 1947, she had to curtail her activities. She moved to Winnipeg in 1964. She sewed for others, including camps and people in need. She moved to Donwood South with her mother in 1982. Her mother passed away in 1991. She moved to Donwood Personal Care Home in 2001. She was able to encourage others with a cheery word or prayer. She was a charter member of McIvor Avenue MB Church, Winnipeg. Katherine Loewen died July 18, 2003 (from obituary in MB Herald, Dec 26, 2003).

The material in this collection has been collected by Katherina Loewen and donated to the Centre.

Scope and Content

The material in this collection consists of letters from twenty-seven different missionaries to Katherina Loewen. The missionaries were working in many different regions such as Asia, Latin America, Africa, Europe etc. from 1951–1980. Some of the missionaries include Willie and Margaret Baerg, Agnes Esau, Katy Penner, Sally Schroeder, and Ruth Wiens.
