Biographical Sketch

Johann J. Dick was born in Lichtfelde, south Russia on May 27, 1866. He married Lise Harder who was born on June 1, 1868. Together they had five children, three of which died in infancy, when Lise died on June 14, 1902. On January 12, 1903, Johann Dick married Elizabeth Unrau who was born on September 22, 1868, in Rudnerweide, south Russia. In 1927, they immigrated to Canada and settled in Coaldale, Alberta. Johann Dick died on June 26, 1968. His wife, Lise, died on May 20, 1963.

Custodial History

The material in this collection was produced by Johann Dick. After he died, his wife continued the book. After she died a few dates were added by an unknown person. The material was donated by Dr. Ted Regehr of Calgary, Alberta on December 5, 1980. Johann Dick was Ted Regehr’s maternal great uncle.

Scope and Content

The material in this collection consists of a book that contains a genealogical record of the Dick family and an autobiography by Johann Dick, dates ranging from 1789 to 1971. The family register is of Johann Dick and his descendants. The biography material also incudes information of previous generations and wider Mennonite history such as the confessions of faith in Prussia 1545 and 1674. The material is written in German Gothic script.
