Jacob Balzer was born in Marienthal ca. 1847. In 1875, he married Katherina Ediger who was born in 1847, to Solomon Peter Ediger (1805–1870) and Margaretha Eitzen (1808–1872). They had at least three children that grew to adulthood. Daniel (1887–1962), David (1877–1918), and Maria (Martens). Jacob and Katherina lived in the village of Schardau, south Russia. Katherina died in 1916. Jacob Balzer immigrated to Canada where he died in Crowfoot, Alberta, on December 30, 1934.
The material was donated by Katharine Esau at an unknown date. It is probable it was donated at the same time she donated her father’s and uncle’s material to the Centre in March 1974.
