Administrative History

In 1910, the first conference of the Northern District of Mennonite Brethren Churches of North America* was convened in Herbert, Saskatchewan. A year later, the Schulkomitee (School Committee) was formed in order to investigate the creation of a German school where young people could study the Bible and receive biblical instruction. The committee continued to oversee and maintain the educational institutions of the Northern District, dividing into multiple committees or groups that looked after specific areas, such as Bible schools, high schools and the German language.

In 1944, B.B. Janz, chairman of the Schulkomitee, asked the Conference to consider financing a new school that was independent of any existing Bible schools, and that this school be located in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The result was the Mennonite Brethren Bible College, which was established that same year. To accommodate the management of the school, the Schulkomitee delegated matters through the Komitee für das Bibel-College. This committee was renamed the Mennonite Brethren Bible College Committee in 1954, and finally, the Board of Higher Education in 1967.

As evidenced by its earlier title, the main responsibility of the Board of Higher Education was the maintenance and management of the Mennonite Brethren Bible College in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Other responsibilities included the Student Services program, the Canadian Mennonite Brethren Conference Archives (later named the Centre for Mennonite Brethren Studies), and the Historical Committee. In 1973, the board also began organizing annual inter-institutional consultations, an event that brought all of the Mennonite Brethren schools and institutions together.

In 1992, the Mennonite Brethren Bible College was renamed Concord College and ceased to fall under the authority of the Board of Higher Education. The board continued to function as a coordinating body of various Mennonite Brethren post-secondary schools in Canada until the Canadian Conference restructured in 1994. At this time, the Board of Higher Education was dissolved in favor of the creation of the Board of Communications. The Centre for MB Studies moved under the jurisdiction of the new Board of Communications, while the college coordination projects were transferred to the Board of Christian Education Ministries.

Series Descriptions

I. Mennonite Brethren Bible College (MBBC)
1944–2005.

The Mennonite Brethren Bible College (MBBC) was founded in 1944 by the Canadian Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches. Although many bible schools had already been established, MBBC was designed as a place of higher theological training for church workers and mature students who had already completed bible school studies and wanted further training. The school provided programs leading to Bachelor of Theology and Bachelor of Religious Studies degrees, and maintained a strong emphasis on musical training, which resulted in a Bachelor of Church Music program. In 1963, a Bachelor of Divinity Program was added, but was discontinued in 1972. In 1973, the school decided to simplify matters and consolidated their programs into a single degree, a Bachelor of Religious Studies. This degree had was categorized by majors such as theology, Christian education and music. In 1975, Contemporary Ministries replaced the Christian education major.

MBBC solidified itself as a place of higher learning when its arts division became affiliated with Waterloo Lutheran University in 1961. This affiliation allowed students to take two of their three years required for a Bachelor of Arts degree at MBBC. In 1970, the college also became associated with the University of Winnipeg, who provided class credit for courses taken at MBBC.

On June 1, 1992, MBBC was renamed "Concord College," and was no longer owned and operated by the Canadian Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches but was governed and sponsored by the Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario Provincial Conferences. While MBBC was owned and operated by the Canadian Conference, the Board of Higher Education participated in its management. The Mennonite Brethren Bible College sub-series contains various board and committee minutes, correspondence, policies, syllabi and affiliation agreements.

II. Inter-Institutional Consultations
1976-2002.

In 1973, the Inter-School Relations Committee was designed in order to establish cooperation and promotion of the various educational institutions supported by the Canadian Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches. The first Inter-Institutional Consultation was organized by this committee in 1976 as a way to create closer communication between these institutions. The first consultation included the principles of three Christian High Schools, as well as the deans and presidents of the Bible Institutes and colleges. It was agreed that the consultation was a success and that the event should occur on an annual basis. The committee also decided to expand the consultation to include Mennonite Brethren Seminaries. The inter-institutional consultations continued to be a method for the various CCMBC educational institutions to share their aims and present their programs.

In 1991, the Board of Higher Education experienced structural changes, which eliminated the Inter-School Relations Committee. The Inter-Institutional Consultation remained as an annual event organized by the Board of Higher Education. When the Board of Higher Education was dissolved in 1994, the organization of the consultation feel under the Board of Christian Education Ministries. The inter-institutional consultations are last mentioned in the 2000 CCMBC Yearbook. At this point, CCMBC was once again undergoing structural change that would result in the dissolution of the Board of Christian Education Ministries in 2002.
