Administrative History

The Board of Discipleship Ministries was first established at the Mennonite Brethren Convention in 2002. At this time, the Board of Christian Education Ministries, the Board of Communications, and all Advisory Committees, such as the Archives Committee, were dissolved and their duties amalgamated into one board and staff. The Board itself was made up of 9 members, who were to be elected at the Mennonite Brethren Conventions for a 4 year period.

The main purpose of the board was to equip reproducing leaders and to empower people for Christian life and ministry. This meant developing training programs, maintaining networks of ministry leaders and recommending resources. The Board of Discipleship Ministries had several programs: the Centre for Mennonite Brethren Studies, Kindred Productions, Periodicals (such as the MB Herald, Le Lien, Mennonitische Rundschau and the Chinese Herald) and Age-Level-Specialists (Children, Youth and Adult). Bruce Elwood was the Age-Level-Specialist for Children's Ministry, while Sherryl Koop and Sharon Johnson operated the Youth and Adult Ministries. The variety of programs provided under the Board of Discipleship Ministries allowed for different resourcing formats and avenues of communication with leaders and churches. In 2003, Cam Rowland was hired as the board's Executive Director. He was presented and affirmed at Gathering 2004.

The new Governing Model was also approved at Gathering 2004, necessitating a restructuring of the Canadian Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches. The Board of Discipleship Ministries was one of many boards that were dissolved, effectively ending its ministry in 2004–2005. Many of the programs under the Board of Discipleship Ministries were reorganized under the new Governing Model and are still essential avenues of ministry and communication in the present structure of the Canadian Conference.
